چکیده

For the fast transient dam break flooding with floating bodies presented through intricate city layouts, the traditional grid-based method based on solving two dimensional (2D) Shallow Water Equations or three dimensional (3D) Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations have difficulty in modelling the 3D unsteady flow features and the moving objects in the flow, causing inaccuracies. In this paper, the fully Lagrangian meshfree Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method with the graphical processing unit parallel computing technique employed (GPUSPH) is therefore applied to simulate the dam-break flood through the intricate urban district and to implement floating objects in the flow. Taking advantage of GPUs parallel computing techniques, simulations involving millions of particles (computational nodes) can be achieved. Numerical results identify the complex 3D flow features, such as hydraulic jumps, wave vortices and flow discontinuities, which indicates SPH method is well-suited for the modeling of dam-break flood through urban areas and the complicated flooding flow involving fluids with interacting floating objects.

The Simulation of Three-Dimensional Flow by Using GPU-based MPS Method

A modified moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method based on GPU acceleration technique is applied to simulate three-dimensional (3-D) free surface flow by using our in-house solver MPSGPU-SJTU in this work. In order to validate MPSGPU-SJTU solver, 3-D dam break and sloshing, two typical violent flows with large deformation and nonlinear fragmentation of free surface are simulated. For dam br...

GPUs, a New Tool of Acceleration in CFD: Efficiency and Reliability on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Methods

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a numerical method commonly used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to simulate complex free-surface flows. Simulations with this mesh-free particle method far exceed the capacity of a single processor. In this paper, as part of a dual-functioning code for either central processing units (CPUs) or Graphics Processor Units (GPUs), a parallelisation usi...

Numerical Simulation of Seepage Flow through Dam Foundation Using Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics Method (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, a mesh-free approach called smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is proposed to analyze the seepage problem in porous media. In this method, computational domain is discredited by some nodes, and there is no need for background mesh; therefore, it is a truly meshless method. The method was applied to analyze seepage flow through a concrete dam foundation. Using the SPH method, the...
